Variation of conditions cost: two fees, two different jobs
Changing the conditions on a temporary visa costs $325 from outside NZ, or $325 in NZ. Extending the travel conditions on a resident visa costs $320 from outside NZ, or $320 in NZ. Neither carries an immigration levy, and a listed Pacific passport applying from outside NZ pays $240 and $260 respectively.
Fees as at 7 November 2026, checked against INZ.

INZ's visitor visa conditions page says a variation changes what a visa allows but not its expiry date. For visitor visas, INZ looks at whether the new conditions match the reason the visa was granted, whether current conditions have been met, and whether the holder still intends to visit NZ. Its examples include part-time study of more than 3 months and seasonal work such as fruit picking on a visitor visa.
Resident visa: travel conditions
| Where you apply from | Application fee | Immigration levy | Visitor levy (IVL) | INZ total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I'm in NZ | $320 | $0 | $0 | $320 |
| Overseas, Pacific passport | $260 | $0 | $0 | $260 |
| Overseas, other passport | $320 | $0 | $0 | $320 |

INZ's travel conditions page says most resident visas allow multiple entries for up to 2 years, and leaving NZ after that expires the visa itself. An extension can run up to 12 months, 2 years for some seconded employees and partners of NZ citizens, or 14 days as a fallback.

Full cost guides
Each guide has worked examples, when you pay what, and legal ways to pay less.
Every INZ fee, levy and IVL in one table
Three examples
- A student in Dunedin whose course changed, applying in NZ: $325. INZ's example is that a student visa holder may change courses, but full-time work needs a work visa instead.
- A resident working overseas for a year and applying from there to extend travel conditions: $320.
- A resident and partner extending travel conditions together. Open the calculator for two adults. INZ says a partner applying as a non-principal applicant can apply only at the same time as the principal or after.
When you pay each part
For a visitor visa, INZ's conditions page says to submit the application and pay the fee online through an account or on paper, and for other temporary visas INZ's variation page says to send form INZ 1020 with the fee. Changes start only once INZ approves it and issues an updated eVisa. Resident travel extensions are applied for online with a passport copy, one acceptable photo and supporting documents. INZ's travel page lists the evidence that sets the length, such as an Inland Revenue statement for tax residents, a secondment letter from an employer, or a partner's letter of support and proof of living together.
Legal ways to pay less
- A permanent resident visa avoids repeated extensions. INZ calls it the alternative for anyone eligible, and the permanent resident guide has the cost.
- INZ says the evidence supplied determines the length of a travel conditions extension.
- The Fees Guide has a fee-waiver table for certain countries, and the calculator applies it by country. The Fees Guide says waivers never cover the IVL.
Mistakes that cost money
- Treating a variation as an extension. INZ says changing conditions will not change the expiry date, so staying longer needs a new visa.
- Asking for a change that does not match the original purpose, which INZ says may need a different visa instead.
- Starting new work or study before the updated eVisa arrives. INZ says changes do not start until approval.
- Leaving NZ after resident travel conditions expire, since the resident visa expires too.
- A declined request. The Fees Guide says INZ will not refund the fee.
Extras for this visa
INZ asks for a passport copy and one recent acceptable photo for a travel conditions extension. Supporting documents depend on the reason, such as an Inland Revenue statement or a secondment letter. Estimate:
- Passport photo: $25–$35.
