Work in Nelson

Nelson's economy is smaller and more varied than any one headline industry suggests. The 2024 briefing puts Nelson City's output at $3,841m and its jobs at 32,213, roughly half of the Nelson Tasman region's. Across the region, the biggest employers by industry in 2024 were agriculture, forestry and fishing (6,767 jobs), manufacturing (6,750), health care and social assistance (6,538), construction (6,156) and retail (6,078).

Much of the work follows the seasons. The Immigration New Zealand regions page, which has no date, lists hop harvesting and apple and pear packing from February to April, hospitality from November to March and year-round seafood processing. A job is only possible if your visa allows it, so start with the work visa guide.

What life is like

Nelson sits on Tasman Bay at the top of the South Island. The regional site describes sun-soaked weather and three national parks, and Nelson City Council's facts page calls the region one of New Zealand's sunniest, with about 2,497 hours a year (NIWA, 1991–2020). A 2022 New Zealand tourism page says the city has a Saturday morning market of local craftspeople and a cluster of galleries.

The council's facts page gives Nelson City 52,584 residents at the 2023 Census and a median age of 44.0. The quick facts above use Stats NZ's later June 2024 estimate instead. Median rent is $565 a week across all homes in Nelson City (June 2026).

What locals love

  • Plenty of sun, about 2,500 hours a year
  • Three national parks in the wider region
  • A Saturday market and several galleries (2022 tourism page)
  • An arts festival, with the 2023 edition held 19 to 29 October

Good to know

  • Winter daytime highs are only 13 to 14°
  • Nelson is a small city of about 54,400 people, so check that the work you want exists here
  • Much horticulture and hospitality work is seasonal (Immigration New Zealand page, undated)
  • Regional growth slowed to 0.6% in 2024 (the 2024 briefing)
  • It is at the top of the South Island, so other big cities are a flight or a long trip away
