Work in Hamilton
Hamilton is the Waikato's largest city and, in ANZ's words, its urban and economic hub. ANZ's March 2026 regional report says the Waikato economy grew from $11.9b in 2004 to $36.5b in 2024, and that Hamilton's GDP per person was $101,107 in 2024.
Farming sets the tone, with research, engineering and farm services close behind. The same report says Hamilton was the fastest-growing city council area in the year to June 2025, up 1.4% to 192,100 people. Growth like that tends to bring building and trades work, but check current vacancies for your field. A job is only possible if your visa allows it, and the work visa guide is the place to start.

What life is like
Hamilton Gardens sits on the Waikato River, and Tourism New Zealand calls it the region's most popular attraction. The river is New Zealand's longest and splits the city in two, with river walks and a paddle-steamer cruise on offer. Rotorua, Taupō, the Coromandel and Waitomo Caves are all within easy reach, Tourism New Zealand adds.
It is a mixed, growing city. Hamilton City Council said in February 2025 that almost 170 ethnicities live here and that over a quarter of residents were born overseas. Fieldays, the national agricultural event at Mystery Creek near Hamilton airport, drew nearly 130,000 visitors in 2019, according to Te Ara.
What locals love
- Gardens and river walks near the centre
- Day trips to Rotorua, Taupō, the Coromandel or Waitomo Caves
- Auckland about 1½ hours away by road
- A city where almost 170 ethnicities live (council, 2025)
Good to know
- Hamilton is inland, so a beach day means a drive
- Summer highs average about 25°, so plan for heat
- The city is growing quickly, so look for rentals early
- Dairy dominates regional exports, so farm-linked work is a big part of the job market
- Population and rent figures are for Hamilton City, not the wider Waikato
Visas, study and community
Which visas fit
Hamilton draws people for farm and agritech work, for study at the University of Waikato, and to join family. Typical routes are a work visa with an accredited employer, a student visa, or a partner or family visa. What fits depends on your own situation and the rules change, so confirm with Immigration New Zealand.

Study
The University of Waikato has two campuses, in Hamilton and Tauranga, and its listing on Study with New Zealand says it offers over 100 subjects and about 200 programmes. The Hamilton campus is on Hillcrest Road.
Wintec, the Waikato Institute of Technology, helped found Waikato Innovation Park in 2004, according to Te Ara. Check each institution's own website for courses, fees and entry rules.
Community
Hamilton City Council joined Immigration New Zealand's Welcoming Communities programme in 2021. It is recognised as an Established Welcoming Community, the programme's second stage (council release, 10 February 2025), and the council planned to review its Welcoming Plan with community partners in 2025.
Hamilton Multicultural Services (HMS) Trust oversees the Waikato Settlement Centre. A government ethnic communities listing says its services include migrant employment support, interpreting and translation, and the Computers in Homes programme.
