NZeTA cost: app, website and the IVL

An NZeTA costs $117 on the mobile app and $123 on the INZ website, per traveller. Of that, the INZ fee is $17 on the app and $23 on the website, and the rest is the visitor levy (IVL). Pacific passport holders pay $17 and $23 because they skip the IVL.

An NZeTA is not a visa. It is valid for 2 years for travellers and 5 years for crew, and each visit can last up to 3 months, or 6 months for UK citizens (INZ). The Fees Guide also lists transit NZeTAs ($17 on the app, $23 on the website) and a crew NZeTA ($17). INZ exempts transit passengers who arrive at and leave from Auckland International Airport from the IVL (INZ's IVL page).

When you pay each part

On the web form you submit your request and pay together. On the app you download it, then submit and pay (INZ). The IVL is paid at the same moment, and you pay it again each time you request an NZeTA (INZ's IVL page). INZ asks you to allow 72 hours, and checks can take up to 3 days.

Legal ways to pay less

  • Using the app instead of the website saves the difference between the two fees on every traveller.
  • The app lets you request NZeTAs for up to 10 people at the same time, according to INZ.
  • An NZeTA lasts 2 years, so repeat visits inside that window do not need a second one, as long as the passport is the same.
  • Pacific passports skip the IVL. Australian citizens and permanent residents on an Australian passport need no NZeTA at all.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Renewing a passport after requesting. INZ says NZeTA details must always match the passport you travel on, (INZ).
  • Skipping the check of details. INZ warns that wrong passport details can mean you cannot board.
  • Answering the questions wrongly and ending up with an NZeTA that only allows transit.
  • Leaving a child off because they are endorsed on a parent's passport. A child still needs their own NZeTA.
  • Using an NZeTA when a visa is the right document. INZ says travellers unsure they meet the character requirements should apply for a visa and have one before they travel (INZ).
